Before , During & After Covid19

In the last few months, whole world is worried aboit and obsessed with the Pandemic Covid19, The loss of life is lower than Wold Wars and previous pandemics but impact in terms of shutting down life or business as usual is unprecedented. In World Wars, few countries were impacted but this pandemic has impated the whole planet like never before.

Few important issues to dicuuss would be how did we end with up with this unprecdented pandemic, how has this impactted or disrupted the world and how is the world going to be a “new new world”. In my previous blog, I wrote that we will start meaurig calendar as “BC” Before-Corona” and “AC” Afer-Corona just like most of modern world has been using BC (Before Christ) and AD (Ann Dominion)

How did we reach this stage. One of my friends whom I respec a lot for his vey deeo knowledge about many topics

Two of the most iconic actors of Film Industry are no more with us. We lost one of Bollywoord’s greatest Rishi Kapoor and before that we lost Irrfan Different backgrounds and personalities but both were amazing in their own ways.

Yes, their families and fans will miss them but their work and words will stay with us. forever. That song from one of their films is the best way to remember him. Irrfan is special to me because of the way he had risen beyond the usual boundaies or identities most of us get associated with because of the place or community we are born in. He was born in a humble Indian Muslim Family in India but rose to the highest in the ladders of success from Bolywood to Hollywood. I am making a point about his origin because that is the beauty of the country that Bharat / India / HIndustan is. It doesn’t matter which background you come from. He is a Global Icon now.

From Bobby to Slumdog Millionaire these two greats have acted in such a diverse range of roles that am too unqualified to attempt a bio. But will like to dedicate my blog with the lines of that song, कोई निशानी छोड़, फिर दुनिया से डोल एक दिन बिक जाएगा माटी के मोल

Over 200,000 H1B Visa workers will lose right to work & live in US

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-04-28/200-000-h-1b-workers-could-lose-right-to-work-live-in-the-u-s?sref=8dfGsBH7

Wondering how are we as society going to respond to this Man made (Trump made) Tsunami on top of the Covid19 pandemic ?

Like many other immigrants from India, China and rest of World I came to US on a Work Visa ( L1A visa). My company GE had transferred me from Hyderbad to USA. I had joined GE as a summer intern while doing MBA at IIM Ahmedbad and then GE as a Transition Manager. This transfer to US after around 1 year of working was a big opportunity for me. It oened a world of opportunity for me. Thanks to my wonderful boss H Bala then a VP at GE. He is now MD / Counry Head of Xykem in Bangalore I was hired in GE by Angshik Chaduhary who is now a MD at CIsco.. I was not from a software or engineering background so this was a great opportunity for me and even shock for many of my friends and family. Having lived in US for 18+ years , this wonderful country is my current home and feel free indebted and thankful to all the experiences and expsure it gave me, I also got married within an year and my wife could also start working since she also got a work permit. Many years later my then boss Diwakar Singhal comany sponsored my Green Card and after 10 years of being on Green Card we applied for US Citizenhip and became US Citizens. This made most of Visa related paperwork and challenges almost a distant memory. We could travel around the world without a Visa except for China, USA, Mexico, Brazil. As an immigrant and Hindu American I feel blessed and have been trying my best to give back to both my current country , कर्म भूमि America as well as my जन्मभूमि भारत (India).

However I feel very strongly abut the adverse disruptive impact this legislative change will have on both America & India. This Indo-US partnership was shaoing to be one of the biggest alliance and positive partnerships in so many ways. Modern day America is a country made ny immigransts from all over the world. So many talented immigrants like Andy Grove, Steve Jobs, Elon Musk, Sundar Pichai, Satya Nadella have made the world a better place. Most sectors of economy hvae been impacted positively by the immigrants especially the tech entrepreneurs as well as the research scientists, professors, doctors and professionals. Many non profit entrepreneurship groups like TiE and others have connected & colloborated with each other to solve major problems and created unprecedented prospeity and reduced suffering.

I am very sure that the saner vices in Government as well the citizens of USA will collobraite together to undo/reverse the damage. Members of Senate, House as well as all the state governments, statesmaen, entrepreneurs and civic society will come toegther to reverse this decision

Friends & Families

Most of us would agree that Friends & Family are very important (in fact most important) part of our lives and careers. We exist because of them, survive and thrive because of them. There is no feeling more satisfying than the ability to serve or help someone who needs our help. But helping our Friends and Families is a good starting point. I have very low wealth or knowledge, but one thing that has found very satisfying since childhood is to serve and help. Those with lots of knowledge, teach, those with lots of income and wealth donate, and so on. My biggest strength or passion is the ability to connect the dots and built a community of people. One such community that many IIM alumni have created, curated over the years is IIM Society. We have developed a global community for all alumni of all IIMs in all countries. We started with Linkedin and then expanded to Facebook, Telegram and whatever new technology platforms came but one major milestone was our portal https:/IIMSociety.org. However one of the recurring requests in our Telegram group by many IIM alumni was by to help our Friends & Family. We were in a dilemma because if we allowed that many alumni may lose as such an open community will lose any value or meaning. So we came with an innovative solution and that is by creating a community where we can invite our Friends and Family too. That community grew over the last few years to a significant size, Sharing those links below, feel free to share with any community since “Friends and Family” are open to the whole world. We keep these as moderated community hence have avoided insecure but highly popular platforms like WhatsApp

I moved to Silicon Valley in Oct 2015 and one of the most fulfilling parts has been discovering some amazing organizations, people, and social work being done here. Of course, this is Silicon Valley so some of the most innovative companies of the world are here and so are some of the smartest talents, especially in Technology & Entrepreneurship.I am driven by social impact more than anything else

AshaSV (Asha Silicon Valley) is the Silicon Valley Chapter of Asha for Education. is one of the organizations that I have been volunteering with AshaSV since last year+. I got to meet some amazingly talented & committed volunteers from various prestigious tech companies in Silicon Valley towards giving back to society. The gift of education is one of the most powerful and transformative ways to give back to society.

Education in pc ERA

draft version 22 Apr 2020 11:36am

This week completed 1 month of daily zoom.us call organized by Vishal Kumar of https://learningwhiletravelling.com/  at 10pm EST, Topics are a wide range and participants are also from varying backgrounds but mainly Entreprenurs & Students.  Last two sessions have been on Education.

Yesterday and today I spoke a lot on Online Education so thought will share some thoughts on Online Education from my expefiencs and perspective since have been a student, educator & education entrepreneur since school days.

Below are few thoughts on Online Education.

Here pC stands for pre-Corona & post-Corona and not Personal Computer. Many decades back we had this Vision/Dream expressed by Microsoft Co-Founder Bill Gates to have a PC on every desktop.  He said, “Early on, Paul Allen and I set the goal of a computer on every desk and in every home. It was a bold idea and a lot of people thought we were out of our minds to imagine it was possible,” Gates wrote. “It is amazing to think about how far computing has come since then, and we can all be proud of the role Microsoft played in that revolution.”. https://www.statista.com/statistics/203734/global-smartphone-penetration-per-capita-since-2005/ (Now we have almost half of Human Population wih a smartphone (3.3Billion Plus). Soon we might reach that terget.

Here, I am using pC ERA as post-Corona era just like BC as Before Christ, we can say till 2020 pc stood for pre-Corona and post-Corona era. Of course I am making an opimistic projection that we will find a cure for Covid19 this year. The impact of Covid19 across industries, continents will be a civilizational level transition or change just like the Industrial Revolution and post-Industrial era . Many are calling it as the 4th  Industrial Revolution and will be dominated by AI, ML, Robotic Automation etc

Here I will like to talk about one industry and that is Education. We already had major positive disruptions in the industry via Internet. We have Online Education reach global audiences and at affordable rates or free. Few enablers are

  1. Khan Academy
  2. Coursera
  3. MIT Open Courseware
  4. Wikipedia
  5. YouTube

As i stated writig this blog did a quick google search and found a great collection i found at themuse, com  Will update the one for online course in India too

Then, it pairs you with options from Coursera, edX, and other forums to find what best suits your needs, making the process even easier!

    My Summary thoughts
Online Education is not an option or luxaey but willl be the main form of education even in a post-Corona world. Yes we will have schools, colleges, coaching institutins but online classes will be primay or mainstream across the world.

BC is Before Corona now

Most of the world currently runs by Roman/Western Calendar system where BC stands for Before Christ and AD B.C.” stands for the English phrase “before Christ,” but “A.D.” stands confusingly for a Latin phrase: anno domini (“in the year of the Lord”—the year Jesus was born). … Traditionally “A.D.” was placed before the year number and “B.C.” after, but many people now prefer to put both abbreviations after the numbers.

In my view given the civilization scale impact of Covid19 / Corona Virus on the way we work, live, and relax it may make sense to start calling pre-2020 AD as Pre Corona World and pre 2020 as Post Corona World. It’s not just about nomenclature but also the way society starts thinking, behaving, living, learning, and working. Internet-based businesses will be the new normal.

Those of us who are still operating primarily living and operating in the brick mortar world and delaying the Hybrid model or Digital First will soon start getting irrelevant.

Yes, we will still have Hospitals, Schools, Offices, Governments but larger parts of their services/operations will be operating remotely and via digital/internet.

Digital Transformation used to be a very popular pitch by many consulting companies ( Both Business as well as Technology) but soon that will be the baseline for all businesses. Thinkers /philosophers and modern-day Sages like Yuval Noah Harari have chronicled the evolution of our species from Sapiens to Homo Deux in his best selling books and speeches. Now 2020 will be the year when masses will start to believe in the idea. It is an extinction-level threat and few societies and governments have started to take it that way. AI, Machine Learning & Robotic Automation will need to be added to the primary school curriculum just like Reading, Writing, Maths, Sciences currently are. If we are not trained and certified in AI, ML, Robotics then we will start being considered as Illiterate

    4) Chennai / India: Kaleidofin team led by IIMA 2001 MBA Sucharita Mukherjee I am writing to you today to share some of the work that we are doing with reference to communication with reference to COVID19. We noticed that much of the communication was designed towards middle-class households. The notion of quarantine and social distancing in a rural context where even water supply could be common is much harder. With this challenge in mind, the Kaleidofin team lead by Hemnag and Vipul partnered with a public health NGO (Noora) to come up with these messages as open source, Unbranded messages that can be used by everyone for all of their customers. We have been using these messages for the last few days and have witnessed very good listen rates. There is also a demand sometimes for the message to be repeated. Here is a link to the audio clips (in Hindi) that explain in some detail various aspects of COVID prevention in a manner that’s relevant to our customer base. We have been using this for some time and are getting 80 percent plus listen rates from the customers to whom these calls have been pushed. The below are provided: Introduction, About COVID-19 (in 2 parts) Handwashing (in 2 parts) Don’t Touch Face  Social Distancing (in 4 parts)  Link to Google Drive: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/16j1LpLUbpjhVM7NCm3XGng9lqEP8or94?usp=sharing  Do give us your feedback and do feel free to send these to others to who they may be relevant
